What is the SMITH Migraine Technique?

Developed by Dr. Kevin Smith, the SMITH Migraine Technique is a highly specialized surgical procedure that seeks to eliminate the root cause of headache pain. It takes approximately one hour to perform.

During his 20-plus years of facial surgical experience, Dr. Smith discovered that nasal abnormalities— possibly hereditary or caused by injury—can result in migraine headaches.

Nasal abnormalities, such as deviated septums, occur when the bone and cartilage between the nasal passages become bent or crooked due to trauma or injury.  This pain is often so severe that it is diagnosed by doctors, specialists, ENT’s and neurologists, as migraines.

By removing the bone spurs and off-centered cartilage within the nose, Dr. Smith is able to alleviate the pressure placed on sensitive tissue areas, which creates severe pain in certain parts of the head.

The SMITH Migraine Treatment is a highly specialized technique and not just a standard sinus surgery such as septoplasty, sinus surgery or turbinate reduction—as performed by an ENT.

Dr. Smith’s research establishes through case studies and scientific data that a deviated septum and other nasal abnormalities do, in fact, cause migraine-like symptoms for millions of Americans.

The SMITH Migraine Technique doesn’t treat the symptoms of migraines. It eliminates the root cause of headache pain.

Normally the tissues in the nose shrink and swell in response to different stimuli (hormones, food, allergies, red wine, chocolate, dairy, perfume, light, and sound). When you have a nasal abnormality along with a deviated septum, these normal actions in the nose can cause severe headache pain. This occurs when these triggers cause swelling and the highly sensitive tissues of the nose press against rigid cartilage and the enervated area radiates referred pain throughout the face and head.

The current standard evaluation and diagnosis of migraine symptoms include only a CT scan of the head. But only approximately 5% of CT Scans show up positive with an aneurysm, or other cause for head pain. Dr. Smith believes that all headache sufferers should have a CT Scan of the sinuses as part of standard evaluation and diagnosis, to assess whether there is a deviated septum or bone spur.

If you have migraines, schedule to see Dr. Smith. During your visit, he will perform a thorough check of your nasal passages and conduct a CT Scan of your face to check for a deviated septum or nasal abnormality.

If you live outside the Houston area, see the Out-of-Town Patients page for step-by-step information on how to determine if you are a candidate for the SMITH Migraine Technique.
